Biogas is the product of the anaerobic fermentation of organic material in a fermenter. This gas has a CH4 methane content of 45-70%.
The following are suitable as initial materials for the technical production of biogas:
- fermentable waste containing biomass such as biological waste or leftover food
- commercial fertilisers such as liquid manure
- specially cultivated energy plants (regrowable raw materials)
During the combustion, the amount of emitted CO2 merely corresponds to the amount that the substrates absorbed during growth. Combined heat and power (CHP) plants that produce power using biogas prevent emissions that would otherwise be emitted during the combustion of fossil fuels.
