Edina partners with Iona Capital to deliver GLW Feeds funded CHP solution

Edina, a distributed energy solutions provider has been awarded the contract to deliver and maintain the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at GLW Feeds, one of the largest independent livestock and speciality feed manufacturers in the UK.

GLW feeds premisesThe contract was awarded by Iona Capital (Iona), a leading low carbon and sustainable infrastructure investor and fund manager who has financed the construction and operation of the GLW Feeds new CHP plant.

The CHP plant comprises of a 1.56MWe rated MWM TCG 2020 V16 series genset and waste heat boiler to supply electricity and heat directly to GLW Feeds, thus reducing their carbon footprint and controlling their energy costs.

Edina will design, engineer, and package the CHP engine within an attenuated acoustic enclosure before delivering to site and integrating within GLW’s existing mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Once operational, the CHP will provide energy cost efficiencies and lessen GLW’s carbon emissions by over 1,485 tonnes per year equivalent to removing 1,000 cars off the road.

Hugh Richmond, CEO at Edina, said, “GLW Feeds high electrical and heat demand is well suited to CHP enablement. The cogeneration of electricity and heat from a single fuel source will provide GLW with a highly energy-efficient and resilient power solution. These efficiencies will be further realised in our long-term after-care support, ensuring plant performance and availability is maintained throughout the life of the project.”

Michael Leclerc, Senior Investment Manager at Iona Capital, said: “Iona is very pleased to have worked with GLW in delivering an energy solution that reduces their carbon footprint and ensure a consistent supply of energy to their facility. The installation will also free up capital which would have otherwise been used in the cost of installation.”

Louis White, Managing Director of GLW Feeds Ltd, said, “At GLW Feeds, we have been actively working towards reducing our carbon footprint and maximising our environmental sustainability. The CHP plant combined with the energy purchase agreement with Iona Capital allows us to continue further capital investment in our plant to increase our overall energy efficiency per tonne of feed produced.”

“We now source c.70% of our major raw materials locally to the mill and have already enrolled in global sustainability schemes with other raw materials. Furthermore, we have links with Eco2 to provide a Global Warming Potential for the mill and all the feeds that we produce. We are pleased to be able to demonstrate that we can also reduce our carbon footprint through our energy consumption.”
