Edina delivers full turnkey installation to provide mission critical emergency power at Medway Maritime Hospital.

Medway Maritime Hospital is a general hospital in Gillingham, UK, within the NHS South East Coast. It is run by Medway NHS Foundation Trust and is Kent’s largest and busiest hospital, dealing with around 400,000 patients annually.

Principal contractor

In November 2009, Edina, after an extensive pre-qualification and competitive tendering process, was selected as the Principal Contractor for design and the full turn-key installation of the new power generation facility at the hospital.

The installation comprises five Prime Rated generating sets with an output of 1250kVA each and the following associated requirements:

  • Auto- Synchronising Controls
  • SCADA system
  • Generator Distribution Switchboards
  • Resistive Load Bank
  • Air Inlet & Outlet Sound Attenuation (designed to achieve 70dBA@1m, with 5 sets running)
  • Exhaust Silencer System (designed to achieve 70dBA@1m, with 5 sets running)
  • Fuel Storage and distribution System
  • M&E Installation
  • Provision of Temporary Generators
  • Decommissioning and removal of the redundant generating plant

Power requirements

Due to the client’s high load step requirements, Edina selected the Cummins KTA50G3 diesel engines for the project, highlighting the importance of Edina’s access to an extensive engine range and supply chain networks with various engine manufacturers.

Maintaining power security

The installation was undertaken over two phases on a Live Hospital. Phase 1 replaced the two existing generators at the Boiler House and consisted of two 1250kVA sets, associated controls, switchgear and M&E installation for a future third set. Phase 2 replaced two existing sets with three 1250kVA sets, and associated equipment.

Phase 1 was completed and commissioned in October 2010 and the 2nd Phase completed in June 2011. The complete project was successfully handed over in December 2011 at a total cost of £1.87m.
