Edina CHP home to former BBC Television Centre dream factory

Edina Group, a leading supplier, installer and maintenance provider for combined heat and power (CHP) and on-site power generation has been awarded the contract to supply and install a natural gas CHP power plant as part of the renovation project at former BBC Television Centre, White City, London.

Home to British television and a creative broadcasting powerhouse for more than 50 years, Television Centre produced some of the most iconic and influential programmes of its time, broadcasting historical events, whilst captivating audiences and inspiring a new generation of programme makers alike.

In 2013, the landmark building was sold to property developer Stanhope plc, and awarded international consultancy and construction company Mace Group, the contract to redevelop the 145 acre site into 950 homes, a hotel, and business hub for creative industries, restaurants and retail outlets.

Following a competitive tender, mechanical and electrical contractor Michael Lonsdale Group awarded Edina Group the contract to supply and install the MWM manufactured 600kWe TCG 2016 V12 CHP generating set as part of the buildings energy and efficiency strategy.

The strategy, to provide energy efficient electricity and heat to the community of White City, outlined a potential reduction in carbon emissions by 35% and an overall energy efficiency saving of 19%.

Edina is the sole distributor in the UK and Ireland for MWM manufactured gas engines, which are world renowned for achieving maximum electrical and thermal efficiency, low operating and servicing costs and high reliability and availability.

It is anticipated that the CHP plant will connect to the existing White City District Heating Network in an attempt to further reduce energy costs, carbon emissions, and achieving world leading sustainability assessment BREEAM Excellent certification.

The CHP plant will be containerised at Edina’s manufacturing facility based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, and it is expected that the containerised CHP plant will be housed within a purpose built on-site energy centre.

The energy centre will cater for White City’s community demands, powering the local infrastructure and providing cost effective energy solutions for its occupiers.

Tony Fenton, Joint Managing Director at Edina, comments; “The 600kWe TCG 2016 V12 CHP offers guaranteed efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental sustainability. This coupled with the low lifecycle costs and high profitability, provides a perfect fit solution for Television Centre’s energy infrastructure requirement.”

The project is well underway and the first phase of the scheme will be completed and occupied in 2017.
